How often should I have my asphalt and concrete pavement evaluated?
We recommend yearly check-ups to evaluate the current situation and needs of your asphalt pavement or concrete. Preventative maintenance is necessary in order to get the most out of your pavement.
How long does concrete pavement last?
When properly installed and maintained concrete pavements can last 30 years or more. However, weather and other conditions make each situation different.
How long does asphalt
Properly installed and appropriately maintained asphalt pavements can last 20 years or more. Weather, traffic, and other various conditions make every situation different.
What are some of the causes of asphalt failure?
Inadequate thickness of the asphalt to support the loads that travel across it, lack of maintenance, and weak subgrade components. Weather takes its toll on your asphalt as well- asphalt deteriorates when weather and traffic wear fine aggregates away. When these fine aggregates are worn away, there is nothing to bind the larger aggregates together, and the surface begins to wear away. The weakened pavement allows water to penetrate the subgrade of the pavement, and this eventually leads to pavement failure.
What causes potholes?
Potholes have multiple possible causes: poor drainage, base failure under heavy loads, too thin of asphalt, or poor quality of asphalt (poor compaction, burnt asphalt, not enough oil mixed, etc.).
When must pavement be removed and replaced?
If your existing pavement is completely unusable due to age, neglect, or change of use, then it must be removed or replaced. if your asphalt is more than 60% cracked, we recommend removal and replacement because it is more cost effective than continued patching.
Is asphalt recyclable?
Yes! Asphalt is actually the most recyclable material in the United States. Elias Bros. recycles and uses recyclable materials whenever possible, making us an environmentally responsible company.
How is typical asphalt pavement designed?
Pavement structure is comprised of many layers, the bottom most layer is the subgrade (existing soil). The next layer is an aggregate base layer – this layer can sometimes be stabilized with asphalt or cement. What follows this layer is one or more layers of the asphalt pavements. The bottom of the asphalt pavement is called the base course. The paved surface course is the tope layer, and this layer is responsible for smooth ride and skid resistance.
The surface course can actually be comprised of many layers, depending on structural needs. The uppermost asphalt layer is generally made with smaller size aggregates than the base course- this allows for a closed, tight surface texture that keeps water and other weather elements out.
